01Plain-English summary

The rest of this page is the long version. Skim the headings; it's deliberately short.

02What we collect

We try to collect the bare minimum we need to make NEAR work.

Account & profile

• Email address — for sign-in and the very occasional product email.
• Profile data you enter — your name, profile photo, short bio, and the social handles you paste in.
• Your pins — the people you've saved from a NEAR encounter. Pins are private to your account.

Proximity data (only while sharing)

• Bluetooth signal strength — used in real time to estimate distance between two NEAR devices. Not stored.
• Short-lived rotating identifier — a token your phone broadcasts so other NEAR phones can recognize you as a NEAR user. Rotates frequently and is not tied to your account on-device by other people.

Technical

• Device model + iOS version — to triage crashes.
• Anonymous app crash & performance logs. No content of your profile is included.

03What we don't collect

NEAR has no map and no map permissions. The "near" in our name is Bluetooth-near, not GPS-near.

04How we use it

• To show your profile card to other NEAR users physically near you, only while you've tapped Start Sharing.
• To deliver the app's core features — sign-in, profile editing, your pins.
• To fix bugs and improve performance.
• To email you about your account or major changes to NEAR. We don't send marketing newsletters.

We don't profile you, build an interest graph, or sell behavioural data. There is nothing to optimize against — there's no feed.

05Who we share with

Three buckets, in order from most to least common:

1. Other NEAR users physically near you

While you're sharing, the profile data you chose to enter is broadcast to nearby NEAR users. This is the whole point of the app and you control it with one tap.

2. Service providers

We use a small number of vendors to run NEAR (hosting, transactional email, crash reporting). They process data on our behalf under written contracts and may not use it for their own purposes.

3. Law & safety

We may disclose data if we are required to by valid legal process, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect someone's safety. We will challenge overbroad requests where reasonable.

We do not sell your personal data and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

06How long we keep it

• Proximity data — never stored. Discarded the moment a connection ends.
• Your profile — until you delete your account.
• Your pins — until you delete them, or your account.
• Crash & performance logs — up to 90 days, then deleted.

Deleting your account from inside the app removes your profile within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain a record (rare).

07Your rights

Wherever you live, you can:

• See what's on your profile (it's all visible in-app).
• Edit or delete any of it, any time.
• Delete your account from inside the app.
• Export your data by emailing management@getnear.app.
• Tell us to stop emailing you outside of essential account messages.

If you're in the EU/UK or California, you also have the rights specific to those laws (access, rectification, erasure, portability, objection, opt-out of sale/share). We honour all of them. Email us.

08Security

We encrypt data in transit (TLS) and at rest. The Bluetooth proximity layer uses rotating identifiers so a parked observer can't follow a single NEAR user over time. No security is perfect — please use a strong, unique password and keep your phone updated.

09Kids

NEAR is for people 13 years of age or older. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you believe a child has signed up, email us and we'll remove the account.

10Changes

If we change anything material here, we'll update the Effective date at the top and notify you in-app or by email before the change applies to data we already have.
